What Is “Smart Porn”?

Bright Desire markets itself as “smart porn” but what exactly is meant by that?

Well, to put it simply, Bright Desire knows that sexiness and intelligence aren’t mutually exclusive.

I know that people don’t become idiots just because they’re turned on and my porn doesn’t treat my audience that way. Bright Desire assumes that you are a thinking person who is interested in seeing hot, realistic, joyful, imaginative porn, porn that goes beyond the usual tropes and worn cliches. You understand that erotic film comes in a variety of forms and expression. Also, I’m not going to dumb down my language or opinions or philosophy simply because I’m offering sexually explicit material.

I also know that the performers in porn are smart as well and I treat them as such. You won’t find any derogatory or insulting language about the performers on this site.

The ethics and philosophy behind Bright Desire is characterized as “sex positive” – that is, it takes an understanding and inclusive approach to sex and sexuality and being open to new things. Sex positivity sees sex as a fulfilling human experience and – provided it doesn’t cause harm – an opportunity for growth, joy, exploration and thought. Sex is a great way to learn about other people and it can be a gateway into their personalities and experiences. Everyone has a unique experience of sex and people are turned on by different things. Sex positivity is about accepting and celebrating those differences.

Smart porn also knows that consent is a vital part of every interaction and thus ensures that the films are made ethically and tries to emphasise consent in the content.

Bright Desire can also be described as “feminist porn” and “porn for women” but I wanted to also use a different, more inclusive phrase to describe what I’m trying to do here. Yes, BD is happily feminist but it doesn’t exclude men and it is primarily heterosexual in its content base.

The other important thing to say about “smart porn” is that it’s a reaction to so much of the mainstream porn that is out there. Namely, mainstream porn can be really stupid. You know what I mean. It often assumes the viewer has the mindset of a 15 year old white male with low IQ and a throbbing load of distrust or dislike for women, minorities and anyone different. Mainstream porn often depicts sex as a freak show or an act of revenge, denigrating the performers via the language used or the scenario enacted. It internalizes the shame that surrounds sexuality and often depicts sex in a seriously negative way.

Bright Desire is about a better kind of porn than that. It seeks to re-imagine sexually explicit media as a force for good, to find a new way to think about sex, relationships and people. In essence, it’s porn that is smart.
